Affirmation of Discipleship

We said the following Affirmation of Discipleship in worship at First Baptist Church of Asheville yesterday:

I take
up my cross to follow Jesus.

Because Jesus commands me, I will love God with all my
heart, mind, soul, and strength. I will love
my neighbors as myself.

Because Jesus invites me, I will pray and work for God’s
kingdom to come and God’s will to be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Because Jesus calls me, I will serve “the least of
these”—the vulnerable, the marginalized, the lonely, and the poor.

Because Jesus commissions me, I will share his good
news with the world.

I
take up my cross to follow Jesus.

I will listen for his voice in the Scriptures.

I will make his ways my ways.

I will let his example guide me, his spirit energize
me, and his joy renew me.

I
take up my cross to follow Jesus.

Whatever he gives, I’ll receive.

Whatever he asks, I’ll give.

Wherever he leads, I’ll go. Amen.
